Part Five

Removing the Guard

SAN FRANCISCO Watching people is an art form, and for Gregory it was the most essential of all tasks. Correctly performing his job required an intimate knowledge of the intended victim. He must know their daily patterns, the times they got up, and the times they went to bed. He had to know their hobbies, their friends, their pets and their vices. All of this told him a lot about their vulnerabilities. His current situation was proving to be one of which required more stealth than usual. Mr. John Malone and his associates were always with a security escort. Usually, this included a driver in a secure car with a bodyguard. He enjoyed watching their normal routine and how bored they all looked as they performed their jobs. Most of them were just former cops he thought because they were sloppy in their approach to security. He was used to the professionals who guarded the royalty of the Middle East and the ugly looking guards of the Russian gangsters.

Gregory thought the best approach would be a snatch and grab of an executive on Malone’s leadership team. They all seemed to have only a driver who appeared to be a bodyguard as well. He could see they all had a weapon holstered under their jackets so taking one of them out would be easy. His biggest challenge would be getting the target out of the area quickly, hiding the person until they made a deal. He had thought about John Malone personally, but Mr. C had warned him off this most direct approach. He had also wanted to go after the purported girlfriend, but he could not get any intelligence on who she was. But the public face of the company existed in a fortyish woman by the name of Barbara Twining. He thought it was rather funny that companies, even private ones like Primera Vista, publicized the names of their management teams, thereby making his job much easier.

The plan had come to him after watching her for about two weeks and doing everything he could think of to map out her daily comings and goings. The streets of San Francisco were perfect for a snatch job, and he already had purchased a van and had it painted to look like a delivery truck for a freight forwarding company. A van would allow him to get in very close to the car by slamming on his breaks and allowing the car to rear end him. The accident would then turn into a confrontation with the driver who would come out of the car and get into a shouting match with him. The argument would allow him just enough time to neutralize the guard and grab the woman. Having lots of money made the job so much easier. People would rent you garages, paint your car, and get you anything you wanted for a large amount of cash. He looked forward to doing the job tomorrow afternoon when Barbara Twining was on her way to her weekly hair appointment.
